GVMC Begins Demolition of Matsya Darshini Aquarium in Vizag
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has started demolishing the iconic Matsya Darshini aquarium located on RK Beach Road in Visakhapatnam.
The aquarium, which stood for more than three decades near the famous RK Beach and Submarine Museum area, was considered one of the city’s well-known tourist and educational attractions.
According to officials, the demolition process began following a lease-related dispute between GVMC and the private party operating the aquarium facility. Authorities stated that a final decision regarding the future use of the site is yet to be taken.
A Popular Tourist Landmark in Vizag
Established around 1994, Matsya Darshini became a memorable destination for both tourists and Vizag residents, especially children and families visiting RK Beach.
The aquarium showcased a variety of freshwater and marine fish species, including colorful clownfish, lionfish, and several exotic aquatic species. Over the years, it gained popularity as an educational and recreational spot in Visakhapatnam.
Located near the iconic RK Beach Road and close to the Submarine Museum, the aquarium attracted thousands of visitors every year.
Demolition Linked to Beach Road Development
Officials indicated that the demolition may be connected to ongoing beach road beautification and redevelopment plans in Visakhapatnam. Structural concerns and lease issues were also reportedly part of the decision.
The removal of the long-standing structure has sparked emotional reactions among Vizag residents, many of whom shared nostalgic memories associated with the aquarium.
Several locals described Matsya Darshini as a “childhood favorite” and expressed sadness over the loss of one of Vizag’s oldest entertainment landmarks.
Public Reactions Across Social Media
Following the demolition, discussions began trending on local social media platforms, with many people recalling school trips, family visits, and childhood memories connected to the aquarium.
The development has once again highlighted the balance between urban modernization and preserving nostalgic landmarks in Visakhapatnam.
Officials are expected to announce future plans for the prime RK Beach Road location after the demolition process is completed.
