Bharat Forge marine gas turbine repair facility in Visakhapatnam

Bharat Forge to Establish India’s First Marine Gas Turbine Facility in Vizag

In a major boost to India’s defence manufacturing sector, Bharat Forge has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to establish India’s first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine (MGT) repair, overhaul, and development facility in Visakhapatnam.

The upcoming facility will be developed on 80 acres inside the defence manufacturing corridor in Vizag. The project is expected to significantly strengthen India’s naval defence infrastructure while also creating nearly 750 employment opportunities in the region.

Strategic Location Near Naval Command

The facility will be strategically located close to the Naval Dockyard and Eastern Naval Command in Vizag. This location will allow faster servicing, maintenance, and collaboration with the Indian Navy, making Visakhapatnam a crucial defence manufacturing and maintenance hub in India.

The project is expected to improve operational efficiency for Indian Navy propulsion systems and reduce India’s dependence on imported marine gas turbine servicing technologies.

Phase-Wise Development Plan

Phase 1 – Repair & Overhaul Complex

The first phase of the project will focus on building a full-scale repair and overhaul complex for marine gas turbines. This phase includes:

  • Advanced blade repair systems
  • High-speed maintenance capabilities
  • 72-hour turnaround servicing support
  • Dedicated infrastructure for Indian Navy turbine systems

This phase is designed to provide rapid and efficient maintenance support for naval surface combatants.

Phase 2 – Development & Testing Facility

The second phase will focus on indigenous engine development and testing infrastructure. Key features include:

  • Development and assembly hall
  • Hot-test cell for engine testing
  • Indigenous marine engine support systems
  • Advanced research and development infrastructure

This expansion aligns with India’s growing focus on self-reliance in defence manufacturing and indigenous technology development.

Boost for Atmanirbhar Bharat Initiative

The Bharat Forge project strongly supports the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. By establishing this facility in Vizag, India aims to reduce dependence on foreign repair and overhaul services for naval propulsion systems.

The facility is also expected to become a regional repair hub for the navies of friendly foreign nations, further strengthening India’s strategic position in the Indo-Pacific region.

Announcement at Aerospace & Defence Investment Conclave

The project was officially announced during the Aerospace and Defence Investment Conclave held in Puttaparthi in the presence of Rajnath Singh and N. Chandrababu Naidu.

The announcement highlights Andhra Pradesh’s growing importance in India’s defence and aerospace ecosystem, with Vizag emerging as a key strategic industrial destination.

Vizag Emerging as a Defence & Industrial Hub

With major investments in defence, aerospace, IT, and infrastructure sectors, Vizag is rapidly transforming into one of India’s leading industrial cities. The Bharat Forge marine gas turbine facility adds another milestone to Vizag’s development journey.

The project is expected to attract additional investments, improve local employment opportunities, and enhance the city’s reputation as a major defence manufacturing hub in India.
