Vizag Port Becomes India’s First 100% Solar-Powered Major Port

A major environmental achievement has put Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) in the national spotlight. The port has become the first major port in India to operate entirely on 100% solar power, setting a new benchmark for sustainability and clean energy adoption.

This remarkable accomplishment has earned the port the prestigious L2 Green Port Accreditation, awarded by the Centre of Excellence on ESG and Circularity for its outstanding commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable infrastructure.

A Historic Green Milestone for Vizag

The recognition highlights the growing role of Visakhapatnam as a leader in sustainable development. By meeting its entire electricity requirement through renewable solar energy, the port has significantly reduced its carbon footprint while promoting green operations.

The accreditation was granted after the port successfully passed rigorous independent assessments evaluating its environmental performance and sustainability initiatives.

Key Initiatives Behind the Achievement

100% Solar-Powered Operations

The biggest contributor to the recognition is the port’s transition to 100% solar energy, enabling it to meet all operational power requirements using renewable energy sources.

One Million Plantation Drive

To improve green cover and environmental health, the port is implementing a massive One Million Plantation Drive between 2024 and 2027. The initiative aims to plant and nurture a million trees, enhancing biodiversity and reducing carbon emissions.

Advanced Water Recycling System

The port operates a 10-million-litre-per-day Sewage Treatment Plant along with two effluent treatment facilities. Recycled water is used for dust suppression across cargo handling areas and roads, helping improve air quality within the port region.

Electrified Railway Network

Another major sustainability achievement is the electrification of 95% of the port’s internal railway network. This reduces dependence on fossil fuels and supports cleaner cargo transportation operations.

Strengthening Vizag’s Green Leadership

The latest recognition further strengthens Vizag’s reputation as one of India’s most forward-thinking infrastructure hubs. With continued investments in renewable energy, environmental protection, and sustainable logistics, the port is setting an example for other ports across the country.

As India continues its transition toward clean energy and sustainable development, Visakhapatnam Port Authority stands out as a model of how large-scale infrastructure can successfully combine economic growth with environmental responsibility.
