North Andhra Irrigation Projects Set to Transform Agriculture by 2027
The Andhra Pradesh government is accelerating major irrigation developments in North Andhra to ensure assured water supply for farmers across Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts. With the completion of multiple irrigation projects by 2027, over 2 lakh acres are expected to receive reliable irrigation support, bringing a major boost to agriculture and rural livelihoods in the region.
These North Andhra irrigation projects are part of the state government’s long-term infrastructure and water management strategy aimed at improving agricultural productivity and better utilisation of river waters.
Key Irrigation Projects Planned in North Andhra
The AP government is focusing on several important irrigation initiatives across North Andhra, including:
Nagavali–Champavati River Linking Project
The proposed interlinking of the Nagavali and Champavati rivers is expected to improve water distribution across multiple mandals in the region. This project aims to reduce water shortages and provide better irrigation access to farmers during dry seasons.
Neradi Project for Vamsadhara Water Utilisation
The government is also planning to complete the pending works of the Neradi project to ensure more effective utilisation of Vamsadhara river waters. This long-pending project is expected to significantly strengthen irrigation coverage in border regions of Srikakulam district.
Expansion of Thotapalli Canal Network
Another major focus area is the expansion of canal networks under the Thotapalli irrigation project. The extension works are expected to improve water reach to additional agricultural lands in both Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts.
Big Relief for Farmers in Vizianagaram & Srikakulam
Farmers in North Andhra have been facing irrigation challenges for several years due to irregular rainfall and limited canal connectivity. With these new irrigation projects, the government aims to ensure stable water availability for cultivation throughout the year.
The completion of these projects could increase crop productivity, reduce dependency on groundwater, and improve the overall agricultural economy in the region.
Infrastructure Push in Andhra Pradesh
The Andhra Pradesh government has recently increased its focus on infrastructure and irrigation development across the state. Several large-scale projects related to roads, connectivity, ports, railways, and water management are currently under progress in North Andhra.
The irrigation projects in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the agriculture sector while supporting rural development and employment opportunities.
